The First Rule of Holes

‘The First Rule of Holes’ is the hardest one to learn
In the way that many ‘first rules’ often are.
The rule of ‘depth’ must follow
Like the laws of ‘trench’ and ‘hollow’
But the hardest one to swallow sets the bar
‘The First Rule of Holes’, like the ‘Point of no Return’
Is the most important thing to learn, by far.

When I first learnt the lesson I was working for a man
Who was working on a project in a mine
There came, of course, the day
When the work outweighed the pay
And I had to walk away and resign
“The first rule of holes” smiled the man as I began
To feel the stiffness settle in my spine.

The next time it was love that brought the lesson back
Through a girl of the kind you rarely find
With a beauty fine and rare
And an unaffected air
In a soul that did not care to speak its mind
When ‘the first rule of holes’ gives a heart its first real crack
The ‘first rule of love’ is close behind

The last time I saw the rule I saw it in the banks
Where lessons are not easily observed
Where the want outstripped the need
And the pull of pure greed
Brought a crisis un-decreed and undeserved
And from what I saw unfold I have reason to give thanks
That our health, if nothing else, was yet preserved

For those who deal in holes its important for your goals
To know the rules before you dare begin one
The rule of ‘cut’ and ‘fill’
Like the law of ‘moat’ and ‘hill’
Will just follow as you drill or you spin one
But one must always keep at heart the First Rule of Holes:-
‘Stop digging once you find out that you’re in one’
