GIZMOS AND GADGETS
Call them gadgets, call them gizmos, they’re basically the same,
loose descriptive monikers for items hard to name.
My car has several gadgets of whose function I’m not sure,
seemingly, each week upon the dashboard I find more.
Do they help in the chief role to move from A to B,
this is problematical, least it seems that way to me.
Everywhere you look these days gadgets can be found,
try to watch your TV sans Remote for sight and sound,
press the wrong button and surely strife ensues,
think you’re viewing “Neighbours” but, abruptly it’s the News.
Switching to a DVD’s a path strewn with distress
that I have trodden many times, alas, I must confess.
However it’s the kitchen where all gadgetry’s supreme,
for there are housed all doodads of which cooks can only dream,
the humble egg is catered for by many different means,
implements to fry it, poach it, slice it, found in all canteens.
Openers for cans and bottles, screws to prise out corks,
chopsticks for most Asian foods instead of knives and forks.
Yes, kitchens are now different from the ice chest and wood stove,
the sheer array of tools displays a gadget treasure trove,
microwaves, sandwich makers, woks and percolators
see the need for qualified chef coordinators,
and while in practice, many of these gizmos use is latent,
one could almost guarantee they’re all backed by a patent.

Re: GADGETS AND GIZMOS
A lot to be said for the simpler life isn't there - what happens when the remotes die is what I would like to know. It hasn't happened yet but I reckon it will one day - one of the reasons I am so loath to get rid of my 24 year old Ute - at least it's an honest car not some fancy nancy gadget and gizmo driven thing.
Good poem and enjoyed the read - thank you
Cheers

Hi Maureen
Thanks for your comment. Yes, we traded a 16 year old car on a new one about 18 months ago and as I mentioned in the poem, I'm still discovering new gadgets on it.
Cheers, Jeff

G'day Heather
That's true. We get by OK with the basics. This poem was written for the topic of "Kitchen Gadgets" by a writing group I've joined. While I went a bit off track including cars and TVs as well, it was interesting to hear each person's writing on the subject.
Regards, Jeff

One thing is certain Jeff. Someone somewhere is making a mint from those patents. Enjoyed reading your poem.
