WILL THE SONG BE SUNG
©M. Pattie 2013
It started off with “Bacchus” nearly forty years ago,
when Lillee teamed with Thommo and they put on quite a show.
Chappelli ordered shock and awe,
the Gabba crowd, they yelled for more,
amazed and rapt with what they saw -
the Poms were dealt a blow.
And as the win was celebrated, Bacchus stood up strong,
he chanted words that stirred and all the boys soon sang along.
The start of a tradition born
from years of sneers and convict scorn,
a badge of honour proudly worn
they sung that victory song.
The mantle of the Leader of the victory song was held
in high esteem amongst the team but wasn’t sung but yelled
out long and hard into the night
with pride and passion, guts and might
from victors of a five day fight;
a vanquished foe was felled.
The mantle passed from Marsh to AB, Boony then to Heals.
Then Punter, Alfie, Hussey now young Nathan Lyon feels
he’s honoured as the chosen one,
his journey, it has just begun,
he’s yearned for that day in the sun;
then off they fell, the wheels.
The latest leader of the song is yet to lead the team,
with form not good, a changing guard and little self esteem.
But will the song be sung again?
A Gabba win will ease the pain,
the only Pommy hope is rain,
or is it just a dream?
So forty years since Thommo smashed the Poms, Oh what a brute he
sang that song as “Bacchus” Marsh paid victory it’s duty:
Under the Southern Cross we stand
A sprig of wattle in our hand
A native of this native land
Australia . . . you beauty!

"You Beauty!" I'll drink to that. Great poem Marty. Loved the rhyme structure. Made for an exciting read and your final verse ... brilliant ... even though you left out the most descriptive word in the chant.

Yeah Wazza . . . we all know the real wording
mate - hope I haven't put the mockers on the boys though - see they're "8 for" and gone off for rain.
Interesting history of those words. One story is they were inspired by the Eureka Stockade and Henry Lawson's poem Flag of the Southern Cross.
