FUNDAMENTALLY FUNDAMENTAL

A word that’s said so often, it can’t be accidental,
listen, you’ll soon hear it, the word is “fundamental”
and who expresses it the most, of course, a politician,
from the halls of Government or from the Opposition.
Federal, state or local, the pollies can’t resist it,
a necessary term in their verbal tool kit.

Though not a word I say a lot, I know what it stands for,
that is, the forming of a crucial base or core,
a basic principle, an original or primary source
one that you’d expect those who use it would enforce.
Thus, I’m dismayed, on issues called as “fundamental”,
pollies actions seem to be completely detrimental.

If fundamental topics form the backbone of campaigning,
once elected, deeds to meet these surely should be straining.
Why, then do Parties treat the electorate with contempt,
blatantly contending promises made to be exempt
and then, express surprise when the hoi polloi object,
a response by the plebs that’s fundamental, I suspect.

Some may think this summary is overly judgmental
while others, I am certain couldn’t give a continental
however, it’s a practice that’s long offended me,
fundamentally, using weasel words to the nth degree.
Alas, “fundamental” has become a victim in this game,
the darling word speech writers always fit within the frame.

So, every time we hear a speaker utter “fundamental”,
the wording is quite probably there as ornamental,
having small resemblance to the matter that’s at hand,
and in a context easy to misunderstand,
a smokescreen shrewdly fashioned to baffle and confuse
the gullible amongst us, those with most to lose.
