Homework WE 4/5/15 - "Among My Souvenirs"
It seems you've unleashed the nostalgia in all of us with your prompts this fortnight, Maureen. Here's my effort:
AMONG MY SOUVENIRS
(c) Shelley Hansen 2015
I have tiny treasure trove among my souvenirs -
a box of bric-a-brac that I've collected through the years.
They're not the sort of items you'd put under lock and key -
not worth a break and enter! But they mean the world to me.
There's half a dozen silver spoons that once belonged to Gran,
a china cup and saucer, and an oriental fan,
a little vase that's painted with the image of a rose,
a broken watch, a necklace with a clasp that doesn't close.
Some people might dismiss these things as tawdry trinkets, yet
to me they're sweet remembrances of times I can't forget -
the tokens of a childhood which was filled with work and play,
when life was so much simpler than the rat-race of today.
I still remember tea at Gran's - delicious macaroons -
the fan she used to cool herself on summer afternoons,
the image of my father winding up his watch at night
while Mum unclasped her necklace as it sparkled in the light.
The harsh reality of time has robbed us of the past.
Too soon the days grow short - for youth's sweet Springtime cannot last.
Yet still I feel a warming glow as Winter's season nears -
reliving sweetest memories ... among my souvenirs!

Lovely Poem Shelly
I hope you're not a hoarder of useless junk like me Shelly I have a shed pretty near full of stuff I've picked up over the years (not heirlooms that Have real meaning like yours) just odds and ends that I can't seem to bring myself to throw away.

This is lovely Shelley - the memories such special treasures bring back to us are truly beyond price because it is not just the items themselves but the flashbacks - images, tastes, sounds and smells which they have the power to conjure up, and you have put this across beautifully.
