MURRAY RIVER
(By Alanm December 2022)
Roll on you mighty River, on your journey to the sea
roll on you mighty River, the rains have set you free.
They’ve tried to pump you dry, and hold you back from flowing
now they’ll see you running free, your floodplains green and growing.
From Paroo and the Warrego, the Condamine and Moonie
the Barwon and the Darling, the Gwydir and the Namoi.
The Macquarie and the Castlereagh, join in to reinforce
the Lachlan as she joins the fray, to flood without remorse.
From Gorges deep and Snowy Plains that head the Murrumbidgee
the Mitta Mitta and the Ovens flow, to join in the Tsunami.
The Goulburn and the Broken rise, joining Lodden and Avoca
and as the Murray grows and flows, a contribution from the Wimmera.
Countless brooks and streams, swell and tumble down dry beds
as the rains sweep o’er the basin lands, waking them from dead.
They dance and swirl with glee, as they join the downstream rush
to merge into one mighty flood, now descending from the bush.
Your Tributaries have gathered, no longer drained and regulated
flowing down they’ll flood the plains, where man has concentrated.
But nothing man has built can stand before your growing might
your waters will consume it all, leaving man to mourn his plight.
Oh! what a sight you must have been, milleniums ago
gently spreading o’er your plains, to water and to grow.
On your journey to the Coorong, before spilling to the sea
you renew all that you pass on by, running wild and free.

G'day Alan,
All the rivers run mate, it always intrigues me the network of the river systems of our land and their varied journeys to the sea.
Enjoyed the read mate, well done.
Cheers

G'day Ron,
Thanks for your comments mate, when you look at a map of the MRB catchment and see the size of it,it's not hard to see why she is overflowing,
all the way to the sea.
Cheers
Alan
